LIBRARIANS!!!!! Now this is my first LIVE SHOW blog review and i couldn’t have picked a better show and artist to start with! So let’s get into what went down last night here in Cleveland, Ohio at the final night of the #FullEffectTour with the incomparable Durand Bernarr!
So the last time Cleveland’s own Durand Bernarr was here, it was about a year ago, cold as hell and at the Grog Shop over in Cleveland Height. That was my first time seeing him live after falling truly, madly, deeply do in love with his voice and music. Put aside the fact that was the same night my car was broken into by some negroids, the show was OFF THE HOOK! I was swaying like a palm tree. So I was NOT missing the opportunity to see him coming back home at The House of Blues in downtown Cleveland!
So to avoid car theft, I found me a garage with a guard, a guard dog, some lasers and tazors cause they was NOT about to do me in again. I got down there super early wanting to make an event out of this. Have some dinner then a show. So I finish dinner at Pizza Fire (first time btw it was OK) around 5:30 and walked over to the HOB.
So I’m standing in the lobby and I hear him doing sound check (PLUG) so I’m gagging like AHHHH I hear him! But then I’m informed by securitas that my ass CAN NOT be standing in the lobby until 6. So I’m like OK honey I’ll just be waiting right here. So 6:00 doors open! Me and my new fire place friends are posted next to the fire place cause we was defrosting! There’s music playing, the event was standing room with a roped off section in front for VIP. (which I would love to get in on next time) The venue is cute also my first time being in the HOB so I’m just taking this all in.
So we tootsie rolling to the music, 6:30 roll around…. Then 7…. Then 7:30…. By this time you know me, I’m like “ummmmm Lauryn Hill and the FugeeLa must be coming on cause girl it’s been two hours?!” But finally at 8 we get some relief from my mistress of ceremony whose name I don’t remember but I need to find her on IG cause she can be a friend in my head! Love her. Will Blaze, another Cleveland native opened the show with a few songs and lemme tell you what. I appreciate that Bernarr gets artist to open for him with a similar sound and mood as he creates. This man can sing his FACE off. He did some song, what was it called “Do you” or “doing you” something or another but BABY!!! I WAS ABOUT TO GET ON THAT STAGE AND BODY ROLL FOR EVERYBODY IN THE BUILDING! He really set a mood for the Yellow to get on stage and ZDIP AND ZOOO IT!
So our homegirl gave us a 15 minute intermission before Durand comes on which I took as my opportunity to grab an inhaler, slick down my edges, bobby pin down my wig and clear some space in my phone cause it was about to go DOWN!
LEMME JUST TELL Y’ALL. There’s incense being burned, drinks being sat, microphones being DRAPED in this beautiful yellow scarf situation (that I need btw). The mood was set for him to come out and make me high! So they play my intro from the new album, “Sound Check” and he come tootsie rolling out with his back up vocalist (who slayed). So I’m dippin it and singing along, trying to record at the same time; which didn’t work out. He did, I believe all the songs from the new project, introduced two NEW songs from him upcoming album (which I can’t wait for. “After Noon” is my SHIT) plus some older material which because I’m a true Rand Clan card holder, I knew the words to.
The show was just incomparable. It was set just right in an intimate size space and the music is, for me, best received in those intimate spaces. I gagged all night. He ended the show with his viral sensation of Beyoncé’s “Sorry” with a message. “I ain’t sorry for my skin” in response to all the tomfoolery and injustice against the black community. With a fist in the air and every fist raised he closed the show. Yea I cried twice!
Overall, Durand has a fan/stalker for LIFE in me and as long as he’s doing music, he’s got my support. And you KNOW he got my support when I went to that merchandise table!!! Girl lemme tell you the story. So I seen the table when I walked in and I was like “ohhhhhh I want a t-shirt!”(Y’all know I love a t-shirt!) So at the end of the show, I tootsie roll over and get one. So our homegirl of ceremony is charging my card and says, “I texted you your receipt.” I’m like cool. GIRL I OPENED THAT RECEIPT IT SAID $21.50! I like to take that shirt over to Durand, wipe some sweat, get some incense ashes and spill some tea on it to commemorate! But I’m always saying SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL TALENT WHENEVER YOU CAN! So he got this 50$ out of me and IT was well worth every penny.
